Stop Poverty Campaign

In 2017 ATD Fourth World launched a global mobilization campaign to mark a milestone in its efforts to overcome poverty, to reach new people and communities, and to involve new partners, with the conviction that it is in acting together, and in partnership with people living in extreme poverty, that we can end poverty.

Launched on February 12, 2017, the day of the centenary of the birth of Joseph Wresinski, the campaign was also an opportunity to celebrate the 60th anniversary of ATD Fourth World and the 30th anniversary of the World Day for the Eradication of Extreme Poverty.
After ten months of online and on-the-ground events in more than 30 countries around the world, the campaign culminated with the celebration of October 17 in many countries around the world .

This campaign has reached hundreds of thousands of people around the world, with the active support of dozens of local, national and international organizations and has been able to breathe new life into this global movement to eliminate extreme poverty. .

Thanks to this worldwide mobilization, ATD Fourth World has received the support of more than twenty civil society partners, including the International Trade Union Confederation, Social Watch, the European Network Against Poverty, the Global Call for Action Against poverty and many more.

This movement to end extreme poverty has never seemed so strong and so present.

The call to action

The call to action was at the heart of this campaign. More than 6,000 people have registered their name and added their photo to the Stop Poverty mosaic. Many ambassadors and elected deputies from all over the world, all signatories alongside activists and people living in extreme poverty.
An extraordinary success, which opens up many prospects for future cooperation with this diversity of actors.

1001 Stories of Change

True stories of collective action, from more than thirty countries, showing that poverty is not inevitable and that when we come together, poverty and social exclusion can be eliminated.

Concerts and choirs “Joining our voices together”

Music played a major role from the beginning of this campaign. Concerts and shows to celebrate the courage and struggles of peoples who have experienced poverty in history, based on their songs of resistance and hope. In line with the “100,000 voices for the voiceless” operation, which marked the first Day for the Eradication of Extreme Poverty on October 17, 1987, the Stop Poverty campaign published a booklet of committed songs chosen by people who fight against extreme poverty throughout the world. Over 2500 copies of this booklet have been printed. Concerts for the benefit of the cultural actions of ATD Fourth World were organized throughout the year in France, Ireland, Belgium, Guatemala, Canada, Central African Republic, Great Britain, United States, Switzerland, Luxembourg.
The music video “With my two hands, I can change the world” was performed with ATD Fourth World member artists from Haiti, Burkina Faso and Spain.

A Web TV for October 17

For the thirtieth World Day for the Eradication of Extreme Poverty, the events organized in 6 countries were broadcast thanks to a Web TV which made it possible to experience an interconnected October 17 between the countries.

Beyond all the figures, it is the actions experienced together during this campaign, with people who live in poverty, which are a source of pride and courage to tirelessly pursue the fight for the rights and respect for the dignity of all people.
